Director, Monoclonal Antibody Shared Resource

Kwan-Ki Hwang, PhD is a Senior Research Scientist at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute. He obtained his PhD in Physiology at Michigan State University in 1999. Upon graduation, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Pojen P. Chen at the University of California Los Angeles. As a postdoctoral fellow and an assistant research professor, he studied pathogenic mechanisms of autoimmune diseases including anti-phospholipid syndrome.

Dr. Hwang joined the Duke Human Vaccine Institute in September 2007. Currently, his research focuses on generation of panels of human monoclonal antibodies derived from patients with acute HIV-1 infection, which neutralize and inhibit HIV-1 infectivity. This research will lead to identification of molecular targets recognized by broadly neutralizing and inhibiting antibodies and development of vaccines inducing an effective, protective immune response in the patients.
